The late Princess Diana’s evening gown sold for $1.1 million, surpassing its initial estimate by 11 times and breaking the record for the value of her dresses sold at auction.
Diana first wore the black and blue evening gown designed by Jacques Azagury in Florence in 1985. She was also photographed in it a year later during a visit to Vancouver.
The dress, along with a corresponding illustration, was sold for $1,148,080, announced Julien’s Auctions, which listed it with an estimate of $100,000–$200,000.
«Now Julien’s is the new world record holder for the most expensive Princess Diana dress sold at auction,» the company said in a statement, noting that the previous auction record was $604,800.
The pink chiffon blouse worn by Diana for her engagement portrait with then-Prince Charles in 1981 was sold for $381,000.
