Too kind for police work
Meet Gavel, a German Shepherd puppy from Queensland, Australia, who successfully completed all the required training to become a police service dog. He was intelligent, disciplined, and ranked among the best in his class.
However, there was one unexpected problem. Gavel was simply too friendly.
Out of forty dogs selected for specialized police training, Gavel stood out for his excellent performance. Yet his warm and affectionate personality made him unsuitable for active police duty, and he was eventually dismissed from service.

A surprising turn of events
While Gavel’s police career came to an end, his story did not take a sad turn. Quite the opposite.
The puppy quickly won the hearts of everyone at Government House in Queensland. His calm behavior, friendly nature, and ability to connect with people made him unforgettable to the staff.

A new role created just for him
So impressed were the staff that they decided to create an entirely new position just for Gavel. He was officially appointed as the Vice-Regal Dog.
Gavel even received a special ceremonial insignia designed specifically for his new role, making his position fully official.

A ceremonial star
Today, Gavel serves as the ceremonial dog of Government House. His duties include greeting visitors, attending official receptions, and accompanying the Governor of Queensland at formal events.
He may not have become a police dog, but he certainly found a role that perfectly suits his personality.

Everyone’s favorite colleague
Gavel’s presence brings warmth and smiles to every official occasion. His story proves that sometimes being different is exactly what leads to the perfect job.

Now, Gavel is everyone’s favorite — and a reminder that kindness can open unexpected doors.
