Robert Downey Jr. plays four different characters in the new HBO series.

Robert Downey Jr. portrays four different characters in the new HBO series “The Sympathizer.” In the official trailer for the upcoming series, the 58-year-old actor looks completely unrecognizable.

The trailer begins with Downey Jr. saying to “Captain” Hua Siu Đệ: “Welcome to the world of espionage!” Siu Đệ, whose character describes himself as a “synthesis of incompatibilities,” uses his skills to become a spy. Downey plays his handler. Later in the trailer, it is revealed that the “Captain,” working for both the CIA and the Viet Cong, may be a double agent.

According to The Hollywood Reporter’s logline, the series is described as “a spy thriller and intercultural satire about a half-French, half-Vietnamese communist spy in the final days of the Vietnam War and his new life as a refugee in Los Angeles, where he learns that his spy days are not yet over.”

The series will premiere on April 18th.
