Taylor Swift’s latest album sold 1.6 million copies in just one day.

Taylor Swift’s latest album sold 1.6 million copies in the US in a single day, including 600,000 vinyl copies, making The Tortured Poets Department one of the best-selling music releases since Nielsen Luminate began tracking album sales in 1991, according to FT.

According to Nielsen Luminate data, Swift’s 11th compilation album broke records since its release on Friday: 1.6 million copies were sold in one day. About 1.4 million of this total comes from sales of traditional formats such as vinyl, CDs, and cassettes, which is an unusual achievement for a country where streaming is the dominant form of music consumption.

On Spotify, «The Tortured Poets Department» was streamed over 300 million times worldwide on its first day.

At 34, Swift is the biggest star in the music business in recent decades. Sales have reached levels unseen since the 1990s when the popularity of CDs led to the US music business overflowing with cash.

«Based on first-day activity, it becomes clear TTPD will debut with 2 million copies [in the first week],» wrote the music industry blog «Hits Daily Double.»

This will be only the third album to reach such a level since Nielsen began tracking sales in 1991. Previously, Adele’s «25» sold 3.4 million albums in the first week in 2015, and Nsync’s «No Strings Attached» sold 2.4 million in 2000.

Among other major releases this year are Beyoncé’s «Cowboy Carter,» which sold 407,000 in the first week, and Ariana Grande’s «Eternal Sunshine,» which sold 227,000 copies.
