They say that dogs are the most loyal creatures on the planet, and it’s no wonder they have earned the nickname “man’s best friend.” However, many are still amazed that sometimes dogs follow their owners everywhere—even to the afterlife.
This time, the story is about Dante, an 8-year-old dog. After his owner’s death, he passed away a few days later, even though he had been completely healthy.
In a Twitter thread, user Victor Coronado shared the story of Dante. He tells how his dog followed Victor’s boyfriend, Elliot, after his death, and how they said their goodbyes before the tragic event.
“My boyfriend and Dante were very close, Elliot spoiled him a lot, and Dante was really cool with him. ‘They could stay like this all day,'” Victor said, sharing a photo of the very close pair.
“When Dante was 5, I decided to get my boyfriend a dog, which he named Nova. Nova was his eyes; he adored her, took her with him when he moved to CDMX for a year, and loved her deeply,” Victor explained about the second dog that entered his life.
But one day, Elliot passed away, deeply affecting the hearts of Victor and his pets. “The day Elliot died, our dogs were very upset, they went to sleep and only saw me crying. I tried to be strong for them, but I couldn’t. One day, I sat with them, hugged them, and told them that Elliot loved them very much and would take care of them.”
What troubled Victor the most was Dante’s behavior, which changed dramatically. “He turned and looked at me, and I literally saw tears in his eyes, it was so impressive, like he completely understood what I was saying to him.”
The dogs stayed with him in his sorrow, but even so, Dante began to act strangely. His little legs “were asleep,” and he could barely walk. This situation prompted Victor to take him to see a vet.
“The next day, I went to work, and Dante was fine, I loved him and said goodbye to him,” Victor said, not knowing it would be the last time he saw his dog alive.
“He wagged his tail at me, and I left happy because I saw him much better. I remembered the test results would come later, and I thought everything was fine. When I returned from work around noon, I found Dante dead. ‘He was gone,'” he wrote on Twitter.
“I cried so much that I couldn’t believe that my boyfriend had just passed away, and just a few days later, my dog also left me. I felt like I was losing my mind. ‘My whole soul was in pain,'” Victor continued.
Victor urgently called the vet, who arrived in less than five minutes to provide assistance. The vet performed tests to find out what happened to Dante: “It turns out the tests showed he had many health problems. I don’t remember exactly what, but there were several.”
According to the professional, Dante experienced “death from grief.” Because of his sorrow, Dante’s defenses weakened so much that he became completely ill in just a few days.
“At that moment, I understood everything. ‘Dante, my dog, decided to accompany Elliot in his other life so he wouldn’t be alone, and Nova, who was Elliot’s heart, stayed with me,'” Victor wrote.
Victor now lives with Nova, and they are one, because for him, this dog embodies Elliot, his boyfriend, and their great love.
