Tom Cruise will star in the lead role in the supernatural thriller Deeper, directed by Doug Liman, as reported by Deadline.
“I’ve never made a film like this,” said the director, “and neither has Tom.”
Deeper follows an astronaut who encounters a terrifying force during a deep dive into an uncharted trench. The project has been in development for nearly ten years, initially launched by MGM in April 2016. Bradley Cooper was originally set to play the lead role, with Kornél Mundruczó as the director; Idris Elba and director Baltasar Kormákur later teamed up for another version, which also failed to move forward.
If the project finally comes to fruition, it will mark either the third or fourth collaboration between Cruise and Liman, following *Edge of Tomorrow* and *American Made*. The duo is also currently planning a movie in outer space in collaboration with SpaceX, which is still in development.
