Kate Winslet still remembers what it’s like to be the target of body shaming. In an interview on the program 60 Minutes, the Oscar-winning actress barely held back tears as she recalled the attacks on her weight and figure after her role in Titanic.
While discussing her breakthrough role in Titanic, Winslet was shown a clip from *E! News* on the red carpet of the 1998 Golden Globe Awards, where the host live on-air commented that the actress looked “a bit melted and poured into” her dress and that she “needed a dress two sizes bigger.”
“That’s just awful,” Kate reacted. “What kind of person does that to a young actress who’s just trying to figure herself out?”
When asked if she had ever responded to the press regarding such comments, Winslet admitted that she had faced some of them “face to face.”
“I said, ‘I hope this will haunt you,'” she recalls her words. “It was a beautiful moment,” she added, holding back tears. “It was a beautiful moment because it wasn’t just about me, but all the people who were subjected to that level of persecution. It was horrible. It was really bad.”
