According to Columbus, Kevin’s mother, Kate McCallister, was a successful fashion designer. This is subtly hinted at in the films by the mannequins stored in the family’s basement.

Interestingly, Kevin later used those same mannequins to create the illusion that the house was full of people.

Kevin’s father, Peter McCallister, worked in advertising. While Columbus did not specify his exact position, he suggested that Peter likely held a senior role, which would explain his high income.

With this information, the McCallisters’ lifestyle becomes easier to understand. The couple had five children, lived in a large home in an upscale neighborhood, owned multiple cars, and regularly traveled during the holidays.

They even paid for the vacation expenses of Peter’s brother’s family, which included six additional people. The adults reportedly flew business class, a costly option even at the time.

Over the years, fans have proposed many theories about the family’s wealth. One popular fan theory humorously suggested that Peter was secretly involved in criminal activities, unknowingly connected to the burglars Harry and Marv.

According to this theory, the burglars’ early visit to the McCallister home — with Harry posing as a police officer — was part of a larger plan. Peter would later file an insurance claim after the robbery. However, this idea remains purely speculative.
